Today is the one year anniversary for this blog - so what better way to celebrate than to do a year in review of what has happened in my industry the past year.
In the first few months of this blog I wrote about boring stuff that no one wanted to read - I just didn’t know what to write about.
In July of 06 I started writing about my site and my competitors and noticed that people started to comment and like those post better. I believe I was the first to report that Primedia acquired HomeRentalAds.
In November of 06 I reported on Primedia’s position with Rentals.com and guessing they would make it their flagship product. I also reported on HomeAway purchasing VRBO and how the vacation rental market is similar ours.
In December of 06 I wrote my predictions for 07 (some have come true already). I also started my RadioVine podcast series which I have not done much with since.
In January I wrote some thoughts on how NARPM could do a better job building an online community. I also reported on RentalHouses eliminating unlimited pricing. Then I was again the first to report that Primedia purchased RentalHouses.
In February I was the first to report on David Bordon leaving RentClicks. I also wrote how CSI owns Atlanta in the Google search results and how that is not a good user experience for Google users.
And this month I reported on RentalHomesPlus lowering their prices.
Stats: 174 blog post and 475 comments in the past year.

Dave,
You still need to find out who is actually running Rentals.com!
Huey lists himself as VP:
LinkedIn: Steve Huey
Steve Huey. SVP & General Manager of Rentals.com. Louisville, Kentucky Area. Current. Sr. Vice President - Rentals Division at Consumer Source, Inc. …

But Huey also has his own company:
Huey Equity Partners

Huey Equity Partners
Founded in 2007 by Mr. Huey soon after successfully leading a turnaround effort and sales engagement as Chief Operating Officer of Rentalhouses.com. Huey Equity’s Partners have been associated with more than thirty transactions totaling more than $4.5 billion, including both public and private entities.
Steven A. Huey
Steve is a dynamic, results oriented leader with a proven track record of sustainable performance in high tech industries. His most recent engagement was that of Chief Operating Officer of RentalHouses.com where he helped in the turnaround and sale of the company.
Co-led the turnaround effort at RentalHouses.com where during his eight month tenure he helped the company triple sales, and listings as well as position the company as the market leader in listings within the top 50 US markets. This led to the company’s sale in January 2007 to Consumer Source, Inc.
Hard to believe KKR would allow someone to have their own equity company while running Rentals.com…..but who knows?????????
What a self serving statement!
he helped the company triple sales, and listings
What a joke….they gave all you can eat listings very cheaply!
You notice he says tripled sales and listings……..but what about revenue Steve? You are an accountant….remember?
Market leader in 50 top US markets……???
I think Borden and Warren would laugh at that!
Everybody knows Rentclicks brought in much higher revenues than Rentalhouses ever did! So how did the Rentalhouses management team end up with the reigns at Rentals?
Sad ending for Rentclicks…….their employees deserved much better!
SAB,
You are right the Rentclicks employees do deserve better than what Primedia will ever be able to provide them. If you look at the history of websites being bought out by larger corporations what is happening is actually quite normal. The top executives stay for 1 year fulfill there payouts and then take the cash and run. Rentclicks has lost the leader of the company and almost all of the top sales executives that have the relationships with the property managers. This is all normal, but here is what makes no sense at all.
All of the rentalhouses management was put at the helm of rentals.com as they slowly kill of homerentalads, RC, and RH. Most the rentalhouses top staff split right after the buyout and the rest will be out at the end of the year but not Steve Huey. That guy will stay as long as he can and continue to write wildly fantastic bio’s about himself and what he does. Only fools will buy into it!!!
I don’t understand it, to me the RentClicks guys were the stars, not sure why they are not running the show right now.
Mr. Rental,
How did Huey become their leader and have time to run his own equity company?
I wonder if KKR has any idea what is going on?
