If you look at the one week averages on Alexa you will see that RentVine is now one of the top 3 rental sites on the web.
I normally look at a 3 month average which is more accurate, but looking at the one week average shows you new trends that may be emerging.
I think it is fun because I am just one guy working part time out of his basement up against Primedia who has hundreds of employees and I am beating two of their sites. This is were I pat myself on the back (pat, pat, pat).
Take note that my site of the five listed is the only non-Primedia site.
My prediction that HomeRentalAds would drop this year is coming true. However in my predictions I underestimated Rentals.com which has surprised me with their traffic.

Great job! It is amazing that you are trouncing Rentals.com!

As someone who looks at internal traffic data, official site gathering data from outside vendors, and Alexa info, I should warn you not to put too much stock into Alexa trends. Their sampling method is used by such a small part of the web that it’s only indicative of what a few users in their network are actually doing, which may or may not represent web users as a whole. From what I’ve noticed, Alexa tends to attract the more web-savvy, technically oriented user that isn’t really a “typical” internet user. I think when you look at niche sites on Alexa, it’s very tough to trust because they have to extrapolate based on so few visits, and from users that may not represent the web very well. It’s certainly useful as a free tool, but comes with a lot of caveats. Rely on your web analytics tool to get accurate stats for your site growth, and focus on that until you can get your hands on more accurate competitor data.
Anonymous,
OK, I guess I spun this post a little too far.
But I think most people that read this blog know I like to spin the posts in my favor where I can - just read the About Dave page on this blog.
I just couldn’t resist creating a post where it reads that I am number 3 in the title. You gotta cut me some slack - that was fun!
Most people think Alexa is reliable - well as I have said in previous posts it is not unless your ranking is below 10K.
I know that some of my top competitors have access to move accurate numbers from HitWise and ComScore - I just wish they would publish those numbers here on this blog or email them to me so I don’t have to pay the crazy $40K to get those numbers.
Anonymous would you like to share your numbers and set me straight? Come on, I know you want the truth to me told! I dare you to share.
40k!!!!! To get stats??? WOW!!!
Yep $40K, give HitWise a call they are not cheap. Actually that number is the lowest number if you get a special deal.
I don’t know what you’re smoking, but rent.com doesn’t even appear on your list.
They have a rank of 3,216.
Not smoking anything.
I don’t consider rent.com a direct competitor. Rent.com does mostly apartments where as my direct competitors do small unit housing.
[...] I received some well deserved criticism from the post I did about RentVine ranking #3 on Alexa - I thought it would be fair of me to write a post where I actually rank in traffic [...]
