Finding a Rental Home on Craigslist Creeps Me Out, How Can I Be safe?

David Borden of FreeRentalSite.com: Ok when we first started on this project we took the approach if you can't beat them join them, we were kind of a fan of Craigslist we have liked what they have done but over the past year and half and over the last two months in particular I have had 100's of conversations with property managers. What is going on with Craigslist is bordering on scary.

Not only do you have fraud from people trying to rent out properties that are not theirs, you are having legitimate criminal activity going on the site. I talked with a property manager Orlando the other day and he said that someone took one of his properties put it on Craigslist and replaced the sign with another yard sign and the person call to set an appointment for the property and when he got there the criminal beat him up and stole his money. So now we are going from white collar crime to criminal muggings beatings things like that. Craigslist started out as a good idea of a free and open market place that everyone could take advantage of that still happens and still accomplishes that goal.

However the complete lack of policing on that site right now is not only unfortunate but it has become dangerous. When you are putting your leasing agents and yourself in harms way you need to be careful on how you deal with Craigslist.

As a tenant the best way to ensure that the rental is legitimate have yourself or with a friend actually meet the actual person renting the property. If the property is a 5 bedroom mansion on Craigslist for $500 then think, is it too good to be true, it is then it is really too good to be true - don't believe it you have to cross check the ad, you have to call the person advertising it and if they will not answer the call that is your first red flag, if they want to only deal over email or money orders that is another red flag, if the pictures look like they have been stolen from another source, the only way to verify is to actually meet the person advertising the rental and verify it is their listing. You can do that with public records, but the best way is meeting the actual person and bring someone with you to be safe.
