Hot takes: what AI agents really are (and aren't)

Short on time? Get the quick version.

Everyone's throwing around the word "agent" right now. Rentvine's president says most of them are using it wrong. In this Hot Takes episode, Randall sits down with Jonathan Ewen, president of Rentvine, fresh off his BeHerd keynote, to break down what AI agents actually are and why they're not here to replace your team.

"Agent" is an overused term

Jon believes the future is wrapped around agents, but not the way you usually hear about them. Customers and vendors alike are using the word inaccurately. What Jon is excited about is something more specific.

What a real digital agent looks like

LLMs and machine learning are now powerful enough to create an almost personified agent. It's digital in nature, but it can create and do jobs for you, make decisions, and learn from things you've done in the past. Jon says it will apply to almost every part of your business.

Built to make your team faster, not replace it

When people hear about agents doing work, many worry about the workforce. Jon sees it differently. An agent is a tool that helps your team perform faster and better, and lets you manage more properties with fewer people.

AI can read the full story of a work order

Traditional systems only know the data you've entered. For a work order, that's the status, the description, and maybe some pictures. But a human looking at a work order sees much more.

  • Emails
  • Chats and text messages
  • Statuses
  • Timelines

Those real-world data pieces were traditionally impossible to analyze. With AI, you can look at every one of them to effectively status the work order. Say a vendor was asked to do the work and you haven't heard back in two days. The AI can flag that and prompt a nudge. It uses every input available, inside the system and out in the world, to make decisions.

Earning trust, then taking the training wheels off

Over time, as the AI learns, it can get good enough that you take the training wheels off and let it execute on your behalf. That could mean sending email status updates or creating estimates, working as if it were a human on your team. The key word is trust. It gets there by earning it.
